The Peasants

The film 'The Peasants' was based on the novel by Nobel Prize winner Wladyslaw Reymont. The project was created by DK Welchman and Hugh Welchman who in 2018 released 'Loving Vincent' and also directed both. The story of this film, which is set in the 19th century, follows Jagna, a young woman who comes from a low-income family. Her economic position forces her to marry a millionaire and farmer man much older than her. The young Jagna already has someone to occupy her heart, in reality, she is in love with her fiancé's son, Antek.

Which has her in even greater trouble. His small Polish town where he lives echoes all kinds of gossip, they love to talk about other people's lives. Everyone knows everyone and disputes are common. The villagers are deeply rooted in patriarchy and colorful traditions. Envy and contempt lead to an endless war between the poor and the rich. The community is very proud of its lands and is critical of anything that deviates from the norm.

The protagonist will soon become the center of attention, being the person most hated and detested by those around her. The pressure will increase throughout the film and the young woman's resistance will place her on a tragic collision course with the community.

The paintings that make up this work are in a realistic and pre-impressionist style, painted one by one and create a local atmosphere of the Polish countryside to perfection.
