Plot
Tamako and Tadao, who has autism, live in a house with a large plum tree in the garden. Their life proceeds peacefully until they receive complaints from neighbors because the tree's branches extend onto the road. From that moment, Tadao is seen as a nuisance. On his 50th birthday, due to his mother's aging, Tadao will be moved to a residence. Thus, the protagonist must face the challenges that arise during this transition period.
'The Lone Ume Tree' is the second feature film by Kotarô Wajima, who made his debut in 2014 with 'Kinki', a drama in which a teacher engaged in inappropriate sexual relations with a minor student who was enslaved by his father. His new project stars Mariko Kaga, who, over a career spanning more than five decades, has worked with Seijun Suzuki on 'Kageroza', Yôko Moriguchi, who collaborated with Hirokazu Koreeda on 'Shoplifters' and Kunitoshi Manda on 'True to Herself'.
The cast also includes Shôzô Hayashiya, seen in Yôji Yamada's films 'The Little House' and 'What a Wonderful Family!', Muga Tsukaji ('The Mamiya Brothers'), Ikkei Watanabe ('Love & Pop'), Taiyô Saitô, who appeared alongside Jared Leto and Tadanobu Asano in the Netflix film 'The Outsider', and Reiko Takashima.
