Plot
Femi (played by both Tai Golding and Sam Adeunmi) is a Nigerian-British teenager who grew up in rural Lincolnshire with his foster mother, Mary (Denise Black). He enjoys his routine living in the countryside and has a happy childhood, doing well in school and playing in the fields with his friends. However, when Femi grows older and his birth mother, Yinka (Gbemisola Ikumelo), brings him down South to live with her in inner-city London, his strikingly different surroundings throw Femi into an identity crisis as he struggles to adapt to the world around him.
Femi grapples with his identity in the face of a difficult relationship with his religious mother, the non-existence of his relationship with his father, his understandings of black masculinity, and what to do when his school friends get wrapped up in petty crime under the local but intimidating drug dealer, Mace (Demmy Ladipo). Hanging over it all is Femi's indecision about what he will do with his future and whether his relationship with his mother, characterised by her demanding obedience without, in his eyes, having earned it, is worth salvaging at all.
'The Last Tree' is a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age drama written and directed by Shola Amoo. Joining the cast are Nicholas Pinnock, Layo-Christina Akinlude and Ruthxjiah Bellenea.
