Plot
Ali Ungár (Jirí Menzel, director of 'I Served the King of England') is an interpreter who is in the twilight of his life. At the age of 80, he embarks on a trip to Vienna in search of justice: he wants to find the former Nazi officer suspected of having murdered his parents in Slovakia. However, he cannot find what he is looking for: instead he meets the son of the former Nazi officer, Georg Graubner (Peter Simonischek, 'Toni Erdmann'), a retired man who spends his days hedonistically, is little younger than Ali and he is very disconnected from his father. Georg is moved by the search for Ali and decides to accompany him on a journey through Slovakia. Together they will look for the people who were, saw and suffered the Holocaust in their own flesh, witnesses of the tragedy that will reveal unhealed wounds in a country that has not resolved deep conflicts of the past.
Directed and written by Martin Sulík ('The Garden', 'Gypsy', 'Landscape'), who signs the script with Marek Lexcák. "Without forgetting" deals with humorous touches deep themes of a Slovakia, and a Europe, which still has serious unresolved conflicts. It was highly awarded at film festivals such as the Berlinale and the Slovak Film Academy, including Best Film. All the archival interviews were real. Two months after filming ended, the first interviewee had died.
