Eight women live in the decade of the 30, before the horrific World War II. One of them, Priss, marries a doctor who tries to have children but to no avail. Another, Kay, marries a playwright who is constantly unfaithful. Dottie, the rebellious, leaves her bohemian life to become a conservative bourgeois and marry a boring business man, Pokey is very busy raising her two twins. Polly has an affair with a married man, while Helena travels around the world and Libby becomes a successful and cold writer.
