Plot
In 2009, the English cricket team were ranked at a thoroughly mediocre 7th in the world. The team changed their captain to Andrew Strauss and their coach to Andy Flower in a bid for success at the Ashes against the reigning champions, Australia. 'The Edge' documents the dramatic journey of the English cricket team, beginning with their upward climb to against-all-odds success from 2009 to their fall from grace in 2013.
'The Edge' delves into the history of the sport, exploring its questionable roots as a sport that largely spread through the British Empire in the 19th century, to expand the background against which the English team's journey played out. The team also receive the same treatment at the hands of director Barney Douglas ('Warriors', 'Ark') as a series of personal interviews with figures such as Sir Alistair Cook and James Anderson probe the effects of extreme pressure on the mental state of athletes that operate under the public eye.
Through a mix of archive footage to vlogs with an overarching narration from Toby Jones, Barney Johnson captures this turbulent era of a beloved sport.
'The Edge' is written by Douglas alongside Gabriel Clarke ('Bobby Robson: More Than a Manager', 'Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans') .
