Plot
Warner Bros. Pictures invites you to experience the extraordinary sorority between three women who share an unbreakable bond in 'The Color Purple.' This bold new version of the popular classic is directed by Blitz Bazawule and produced by Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders and Quincy Jones.
'The Color Purple' stars Taraji P. Henson, the protagonist of 'Hidden Figures', Danielle Brooks, known for 'Orange is the new black', Colman Domingo of 'Fear the Walking Dead', Corey Hawkins, HER, Halle Bailey, the protagonist of 'The Little Mermaid', Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor and Fantasia Barrino, in her major film debut, and has a script by Marcus Gardley.
The film is based on Alice Walker's 1982 novel and the musical theater play, libretto (of the musical theater play) by Marsha Norman, and its music and lyrics come from the hand of Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray. This American coming-of-age musical drama is the second film adaptation of the novel, following Steven Spielberg's 1985 film. Spielberg and Quincy Jones return to produce this version, along with the musical's producers Scott Sanders and Oprah Winfrey, the latter of whom also starred in the 1985 film as Sofia.
Warner Bros. Pictures presents this production by Harpo Films, Amblin Entertainment, Scott Sanders and QJP, distributing it worldwide and it will be released in theaters in Spain on February 9, 2024.

Mental health visibility
Taraji P. Henson talked in a 2023 interview on Fresh Air about the recent, unprecedented drive within the African American community to publicly acknowledge and address mental health. "You see celebrities and athletes saying 'I'm going to take a break for my mental wellness.' We've never seen anything like this before, and this movie is going to only shed more light on why we need to heal and break these generational curses."
Origins
It was first written as a book by Alice Walker, which was later made into a film directed by Steven Spielberg. The book was then turned into a Broadway musical in 2005. This second film adaptation is based on the musical adaptation.
