Initial idea
The author of the novel based on the film, Dino Buzzati, who was also a painter, initially drew an illustration for his nieces of a battle between bears and soldiers, led by a bear king. Later, when asked to write and illustrate a story for children, he decided to start working with those drawings.

The film is based on the novel by the Italian writer Dino Buzzati (1906-1972), called 'La famosa invasione degli orsi in Sicilia' (The famous invasion of bears in Sicily), first published in 1945. Buzzati not only wrote it, also illustrated it.
