Amelia Wren
The character of Amelia Wren is inspired by several real people from the time, including Sophie Blanchard, the first woman to work as a hot air balloon pilot. The fictional character replaces the real pilot from the expedition, Henry Tracey Coxwell.
Real events
James Glaisher was a real English scientist remembered for his pioneer study of the weather on a hot air balloon. Between 1862 and 1866 he made numerous ascensions to measure the humidity and temperature of the atmosphere at the highest levels. Along with his co-pilot, Henry Tracey Coxwell, he broke the world record for maximum height on September 5th 1862.
Accident in the shooting
Eddie Redmayne sprained an ankle during the filming of the movie.
Reunion
Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne reunite again in 'The Aeronauts' after having worked together on 'The Theory of Everything' in 2014.
'Peaky Blinders' Connection
The writer, producer and director Tom Harper, the cinematographer George Steel and the editor Mark Eckersley all worked on the BBC series 'Peaky Blinders'.
Flight
Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones did actually flight on the hot air balloon that can be seen in the film to recreate the actual original trip.
