Plot
Inspired by and based on the 2014 memoirs of the same name by political commentator Sanjaya Baru, 'The Accidental Prime Minister' follows Manmohan Singh during his time as the Prime Minister of India in an era in which every decision of his was contradicted and interfered with by the Congress Party. The memoirs allude to the controversy surrounding Singh's tenure that Sonia Gandhi, the leader of the Congress party, was allegedly the person in control of the government, and that Singh was under her control whilst Gandhi attempted to maintain a position open for her son, Rahul Gandhi . Singh was Prime Minister in India for 10 years, between 2004 and 2014, and grappled with the dynastic approach championed by the Congress Party. 'The Accidental Prime Minister' explores the nature of power within the Indian cabinet and Singh's long-term struggles to establish it.
The movie is the debut of the director Vijay Ratnakar Gutte and was adapted for the screen by Karl Dunne. Starring in the political drama are Anupam Kher in the role of Manmohan Singh ('Silver Linings Playbook', 'New Amsterdam') Aahana Kumra as Priyanka Gandhi ('Lipstick Under My Burkha'), Suzanne Bernert as Sonia Gandhi ('Porus') and Akshaye Khanna ('Section 375') as Sanjay Baru.
