Tharlo

The film Tharlo shares its name with the titular character, Tharlo, an orphan with incredible amazing memory. Tharlo can remember everything except his own name. Visiting a small Tibetan town in the province of Qinghai to obtain an ID card from the police station, Tharlo surprises Police Chief Dorje by reciting a lengthy excerpt from one of Chairman Mao's essays, from memory. To prepare for his ID photo, Tharlo needs to get his hair washed, where he meets Yangtso, a gorgeous local hairdresser. Their relationship is both extremely awkward and embarrassingly melodramatic. Tharlo is head over heels, but city-living Yangtso's ideas of fun are quite different than Tharlo's, and as he witnesses his hair being cut in the mirror, he realizes he doesn't recognize himself anymore.
