Plot
Todd Field, the three-time Academy Award nominee creator of films like 'In the Bedroom' and 'Little Children', is the writer, producer and director behind this feature film, which stars an unrecognizable Cate Blanchett as the avant-garde and famous orchestra conductor Lydia Tár, the woman at the helm of one of Germany's most important orchestras.
We meet Tár at the height of her career and a key point in her life, for she is about to finish writing a book, meant to be published, and close to become the first woman to conduct Gustav Mahler's Fifth Symphony. However, over the next few weeks, her life will start to go off the rails in a completely unexpected way, and she will find that there's nothing she can do to prevent it. The result of the film is a relentless examination of power, its effects and its persistence in today's society.
The film features a great cast of actresses in addition to Cate Blanchett, such as Noémie Merlant ('Portrait of a Woman on Fire') and Nina Hoss ('Most Wanted', 'Barbara'), along with the debutant Sophie Kauer. It also features writer and journalist Adam Gopnik, who plays himself.
It is produced by Focus Features, Standard Film Company and EMJAG Productions, with financing from the German Film Foundation (DFFF).
