The taping of the voices was done in four days.
Original plan
The co-writer of ' The Swallows of Kabul' Sébastien Tavel wanted to make a movie with real actors (not animated), taped in Kabul and with the dialogue spoken in Dari, an afghan language. This idea was dismiss due to severe financial issues.
Realism
The directors saw many documentaries, tv programs and photographic portfolios of Afghanistan during the Taliban regime.
Female pseudonym
The author of the novel this film is based on used the pseudonym Yasmina Kadra. His real name isMohamed Moussehoul. He hide his identity because he was in the Algerian army.
Watercolor
The director Zabou Breitman chose to make the animation with watercolor style after seeing Éléa Gobbé-Mévellec project for the film. Breitman convinced Gobbé-Mévellec to co-direct the film with her. Th script was modified to match better with the animations.
Acting
The taping was done in the big estudios in Joinville, in the north of France. The actors were in full costume and performed the scenes. There was a lot of improvisation in the process and the animation, that was made afterwards, took those moments thought by the actors.
