Plot
Directed by renowned musician Ahmir Thompson, better known as Questlove, 'Summer of Soul', whose full title is 'Summer of Soul (... Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)', is a documentary about Harlem Cultural Festival, organized in 1969. Screened at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award, both in the documentary category.
The film examines what was celebrated at the festival, which took place in Mount Morris Park ( now known as Marcus Garvey Park) in the middle of the Upper Manhattan. an New York quarter, and that lasted a total of six weeks. Although it garnered great public support and was attended by renowned artists such as Stevie Wonder, Mahalia Jackson, Nina Simone, The 5th Dimension, The Staple Singers, Gladys Knight & the Pips and Sly and the Family Stone, the festival was seen as an obscure point of pop culture.
This documentary seeks to address why it became synonymous with something dark. To do this, the film shows research directed by Questlove, which features original footage from the celebration and has been unpublished for more than 50 years. An authentic exercise in musical archeology to discover the true reason that the festival fell into oblivion. Winner of an Academy Award for best documentary feature film.
