Sugar Island

Makenya (Yelidá Díaz) is a fourteen-year-old girl that lives in the Dominican Republic. She abruptly discovers that she is pregnant. She had sexual relations with a man but was unaware that she could become pregnant from the act. Her environment is in a very dangerous situation: the mechanization of the sugar industry is gradually displacing workers and taking away their jobs.

Many, as a form of rebellion, emigrate and leave the city. However, the lack of identification or papers complicates the task significantly. This is why they decide to hold a large demonstration against the machines, demanding regulation to ensure their future. Makenya will attend the event with her grandfather, unaware that the world awaiting her child is about to change. What will happen to the workers that are losing their jobs?

'Sugar Island' is a ninety-minute film directed by filmmaker Johanne Gomez Terrero, who returns to theaters after producing 'Caribbean Fantasy'. She is in charge of the script along with María Abenia after working on 'Circe', her previous project. Francis Cruz, Juan María Almonte, Ruth Emeterio, Diogenes Medina, and Génesis Piñeyro complete the cast of this title. Pleamar Films distributes the film in Spain, reaching national theaters on March 21.
