Plot

'Robert the Bruce' follows a feared Scottish warrior king in his shift from the life of a nobleman to the life of an outlaw. After the execution of William Wallace, Robert the Bruce (Angus MacFadyen, 'We Bought a Zoo', 'Braveheart') continues to suffer in battles against the English as his family are captured and tortured. When a bounty is placed upon his head by the King of England and Robert barely escapes an assassination attempt alive, he seeks shelter with a single mother, Morag (Anna Hutchinson, 'The Cabin in the Woods', 'Encounter') and her young children, the aspiring blacksmith Carney (Brandon Lessard, 'Broken Ghost'), archery prodigy Iver (Talitha Eliana Bateman, 'The 5th Wave', 'Countdown') and the baby of the family, Scott (Gabriel Bateman, 'Annabelle', 'Playmobil: The Movie'). When Robert sees a spider succeed in creating its web after several failed attempts (in a scene taken directly from Scottish legend), he realises that he must return and fight for the future of Scotland in any way that he can. 'Robert the Bruce' examines how it is not only battles and bloodshed that win the future of the country, but investing in the lives of the children who will one day lead it.

Reprising his role from 'Braveheart', Angus MacFadyen wrote the script and leads as Robert the Bruce. The film is directed by Richard Gray ('Blinder', 'Sugar Mountain').

Braveheart

the film is considered to be more of a spin-off to Braveheart (1995) as the story does not revolve around William Wallace, who died at the end of the 1995 film, but focuses more on Robert the Bruce, years after William Wallace's execution.

Previously on Braveheart

Mhairi Calvey, who plays Robert the Bruce's wife Elizabeth de Bugh, previously played the younger version of Murron, William Wallace's wife, in Braveheart (1995).
