L. B. Jefferies (James Stewart) is a photojournalist who suffers an accident, so he leg in plaster and must rest at home and sitting. His girlfriend, Carol Lisa (Grace Kelly), is there to keep him company all the time she can, and when she's not, is his nurse. Despite this, Jefferies is bored by inactivity, for them, day and night is passed observing what happens outside the house with binoculars, so what happens on the street and what happens in the houses opposite.
