Plot
The German Andreas Dresen, director of films such as 'Stopped on Track', 'Gundermann' or 'As We Were Dreaming', returns to the big screen with 'Rabiye Kurnaz vs George W. Bush'. This film tells the story of Rabuye Kurnaz, a persevering and tenacious mother of Turkish origin living in the German city of Bremen. Murat, Rabiye's son, is being held in the United States, in Guantánamo, the prison with the worst reputation across the world. Mrs. Kurnaz, as is typical of mothers, worries about her son doing everything possible to get him out of jail. Rabiye goes everywhere he can think of, to no avail. No one can help this mother, until Bernhard Docke, a leading human rights lawyer, joins the mother's fight.
The impulsive matriarch and the formal lawyer will undertake an arduous path until they are heard. Murat's release is the goal, but the vigilante couple knows that it is not an easy challenge. Only a real pardon is worth it, no escapes or escabechinas, for them the liberating tandem will present a complaint to the President of the United States, George W. Bush.
The film hits theaters after having received ten nominations for the German Academy awards, among the categories to which they choose are: best film, best screenplay and best direction.
The film stars Meltem Kaptan, who is also up for awards in the best leading actress category, while Docke, the lawyer, will be played by Alexander Scheer.
