Plot
Inspired by the story of Phiona Mutesa, a young Ugandan chess prodigy whom grew up in the slums of a district called Katwe, after her father and sister both died, she decided to quit school to join a chess team in her village, and ended up competing in three Olympiads for her country. What's more, in 2012, she was proclaimed as the first female to win the Ugandan National Junior Chess Championship. This film is based on the novel by the same name written by Tim Crothers, whom recounts this original, true underdog story. Directed by Mira Nair, the cast includes David Olyelowo, Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o and Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, and introduces, for the first time, Madina Nalwanga as the titular Phiona Mutesi.
