Marion Crane is a young secretary who wants to marry Sam, her boyfriend. However, they both earn little money, which makes the concept of marriage slightly more difficult. However, Marion sees a great opportunity one day when she arrives at the property agency she works at. A client with 40,000 dollars in cash arrives at the estate agents to buy a house. Marion doesn't think twice and grabs the money and makes a run for it.

A policeman starts to suspect her when he sees her acting nervous on the roads. As a result this makes Marion change her plans and even her car. She stops by and stays at the Bates motel for the night and there she meets Norman Bates, owner of the motel along with his mother.
