Plot
Sarah (Eva Green) is a French astronaut who lives by herself in Colony, Germany, with her beloved seven-year-old daughter, Stella (Sandra Hüller). She is the only woman in the European Special Agency, where she works. Her role at the agency takes up a lot of time that she'd also like to spend with her daughter. The demanding nature of her work increases when she is offered the opportunity to go on a year long's space trip. The mission, called Proxima, becomes a serious problem in both Sarah and Stella's lives. Motherly love will face the immensity of deep space in this Alice Winocour film. The film seeks to apply feminist nuances to the injustices and pressure suffered by Eva Green's character as a single mother.
The film seeks an exhaustive exploration of the effort suffered by the protagonist, as a metaphor for women in a historically "men's" work, and how she manages to maintain her firm convictions in an eminently masculine and macho ecosystem. The filmmaker Alice Winocour turns the film into an essay about the problems women have that decide to have a working life while being happy with their daughters although, from time to time, they have to go to space.
The film has won the Special Jury Prize at the 2019 San Sebastian Festival.
