Prison 77

After his time on television with 'La peste' series, Spanish filmmaker Alberto Rodríguez returns to the cinema with 'Prison 77', a prison drama inspired by real events and which opens to coincide with the 44th anniversary of the massive escape from Modelo prison, in Barcelona, which happened in 1977. The feature film will be the opening film of the 70th edition of the San Sebastián International Film Festival.

Modelo Prison, Barcelona, 1977, Manuel (Miguel Herrán), a young accountant man, has been imprisoned and is awaiting trial for allegedly committing embezzlement, for which he faces a possible prison sentence of between six and eight years, a disproportionate punishment for the amount of his crime. He soon, along with Pino (Javier Gutiérrez), his cellmate, joins a group of common prisoners who are organizing to demand an amnesty. Thus begins a war for freedom that will put the Spanish prison system in a complicated situation, which continues to have a regime typical of Franco's dictatorship. At the very beginning of the Transition towards democracy, the prisoners will look for things to change for them as well.

A story that will narrate the friendship, solidarity and desire for freedom of the prisoners of the Barcelona Model prison. Rodríguez is once again in tandem with Rafael Cobos for the script with this feature film that is inspired by real events. "This episode, one of the most massive escapes in Spanish prison history, is also the reflection of a society looking for a new horizon", reflects the description of the film, according to the producers.

Directed by Alberto Rodríguez, who writes screenplay with Rafael Cobos, 'Prison 77' was shot in the mythical Catalan prison and in other locations in Barcelona and Seville. Starring Miguel Herrán, Javier Gutiérez, Jesús Carroza, Fernando Tejero, Catalina Sopelana, Xavi Sáez, Alfonso Lara and Javier Lago. The cast is completed by Víctor Castilla, Íñigo Aramburu and Javier Beltrán.
