Pictures of Ghosts

From cities all around the world millions and millions of people went to the theaters in Recife's downtown during the 20th century. After a long time, the ruins of those big cinemas have revealed multiple truths about how life was in society back then. All of this and more is told through the cinema lens.

Most of these classic places in Recife's downtown have been disappearing during the years. The city area is now an archaeological place that reveals aspects of the old city which once was. Aspects about people's lives in the old society which were lost, but this is just a small part of this story.

This documental is a multidimensional trip in time, the architecture the sound and the cinema directed and written by Kleber Mendonça Filho. The cast is starred by the director and writer himself, who plays also himself and who is accompanied by Rubens Santos, the motorist of this adventure.

'Pictures of Ghosts' is a map of Recife's city, the Brazilian coastal capital of Pernambuco, a human and historical territory which has been examined through the cinema theaters which served as coexistence environment for people of the 20th century. These theaters have had dreams and progress inside of them and also, they have experienced the changes and transformations of social practices.
