Plot

Rafi (Nawazuddin Siddiqui, 'Dying Wind in her Hair') has just moved to Mumbai with the intention of making some money and settling an old family debt. He works as there as a small-time photographer, taking snapshots of the tourists that gather around the Gateway of India in Mumbai. Amongst those he captures with his camera is the shy accounting student Miloni (Sanya Malhotra, 'Dangal') who says she dreams of being an actress despite the pressure placed on her to follow a more traditional vocation. Miloni is called away by her family before they can continue their conversation.

Rafi's grandmother, Dadi (Farrukh Jaffar, 'Swades: We, the People'), tells him resolutely that she will not carry on taking her medicine until he hurries up and makes some moves towards getting married. Wanting to avoid having a prospective bride chosen for him, he sends her the picture of Miloni as proof. When his grandmother wishes to meet his alleged girlfriend, Rafi seeks Miloni out and asks her to go along with the ruse. What begins as a simple ploy, however, grows increasingly complicated as their feelings for one another grow.

'Photograph' is directed and written by Ritesh Batra ('The Lunchbox'). Joining the cast are Sachin Khedekar, Denzi Smith and Brinda Trivedi.
