Plot
Sean (Matt Bomer, 'The Normal Heart') is a self-centered Southern Californian weatherman who, after suffering a breakdown on TV due to his partner leaving him, takes some time off work to recover, but finds he isn't so good at being on his own. Sean decides that his house simply holds too many traces of his ex-partner so he drives to the local hardware store and hires an undocumented Latino worker, Ernesto (Alejandro Patiño, 'The Ballad of Buster Scruggs') to carry out some refurbishments, such as repainting his deck to get rid of the circle left by his former partner's potted plant. Ernesto speaks no English, but Sean finds comfort in talking to him, so he begins paying Ernesto to stick around and do things with him such as hikes and boat rides in Echo Park. Sean shares his heartbreak over his ex-boyfriend, Carlos, while Ernesto tries to tell him about his own wife, who believes Ernesto is having an affair, and his five children. The two men begin to bond despite the language barrier as Sean tries to carve out a life for himself beyond his old relationship.
'Papi Chulo' is written and directed by John Butler ('Handsome Devil', 'Your Bad Self'). Also joining the cast are Elena Campbell-Martinez ('The Big Bang Theory'), Wendi McLendon-Covey ('Bridesmaids') and D'Arcy Carden ('The Good Place').
