'Oppenheimer' trivia and fun facts

Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy

Oppenheimer is the sixth collaboration between Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy after Batman Begins (2005), The dark knight (2008), Origin (2010), The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and Dunkerque (2017).

R- rated movie

In this film we can see Christopher Nolan's first R-rated film since Insomnia (2002).

Fat Man and Little Boy

The previous Hollywood film with the same theme and the same main character was 'Fat Man and Little Boy', from 1989.

The cast of Oppenheimer

The cast includes five Oscar winners: Casey Affleck, Kenneth Branagh, Matt Damon, Rami Malek, Gary Oldman and also three Oscar nominees: Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh and Tom Conti.

Nolan's collaborations

This is the second and consecutive collaboration between Christopher Nolan and the composer Ludwig Göransson, after Tenet (2020). Hans Zimmer is another frequent collaborator with Nolan. This composer was not available because he was already committed on Dune (2021) and Dune (part two) (2023) at the time both Nolan films were being made.

Gary Oldman

While in this film Gary Oldman plays the American president Harry S. Truman, he previously played British prime minister Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour (2017) also set during the same war. That movie competed against Dunkerque (2017) during the award season in 2018, and earned Oldman a Best Actor Academy Award; Nolan was nominated for Best Director.

Warner Bros. is not the producer of Oppenheimer

This is Christopher Nolan's first film not to be produced by Warner Bros. Pictures. Oppenheimer will be released by Universal Pictures. Before this, all of Nolan's feature films were produced and distributed by Warner Bros. with the exceptions of Following (1998), which was produced independently, Memento (2000) which was produced and distributed by Newmarket Films, The Prestige (2006), which was co-produced and domestically distributed by Touchstone Pictures while Warner Bros. did international distribution, and Interstellar (2014) which was co-produced and domestically distributed by Paramount Pictures while Warner Bros. handled international distribution.

Tatlock and Oppenheimer

Tatlock was 10 years younger than Oppenheimer, but Florence Pugh (who plays Tatlock in the movie) is 20 years younger than Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer.

Charles Roven managed to intrigue Nolan

The film's producer Charles Roven pitched the film to the director Christopher Nolan and the producer Emma Thomas by telling them about the autobiographical book named "American Prometheus". Nolan was so intrigued by the story that decided to read it. After that, he took the job to direct the film.

Black and white sections

Kodak developed the first ever black and white film stock for Imax in order for the black and white parts of the movie to be filmed in the exact same quality as the rest of the film.

Oppenheimer is mentioned in Tenet

J. Robert Oppenheimer was mentioned in Nolan's film Tenet (2020) during a conversation between Priya Singh (Dimple Kapadia) and The Protagonist (John David Washington). Apparently showing that Nolan already had the idea of what his next film was going to be about.
