Betty Mahmoody (Sally Field) lives happily married with her husband, the iranian doctor Sayyed Bozorg alias "Moody" (Alfred Molina) and his daughter Mahtob (Sheila Rosenthal) in Michigan, United States. Everything changes when the family travels to Tehran to visit a couple weeks to relatives of "Moody" in the Iranian capital with the little girl Mahtob, who only has four years. However, what seemed a simple family trip to the roots of the parent culture becomes a trap for Betty and Mahtob, which will be held in the country and stigmatized by their Western origin.
