Plot
On 30 March 1924, in the British town of Beechwood, the married couple Godfrey and Clarrie Niven (Colin Firth and Olivia Colman), who have lost their sons in the war, are preparing to celebrate with their neighbours Mother's Day and the engagement of their friends' son Paul (Josh O'Connor) to Emma Hobday (Emma D'Arcy) . So they've given their maid, Jane Fairchild (Odessa Young), an orphan girl who never knew her parents, the day off. What they didn't suspect is that she has been having a secret affair with Paul for seven years. When they finally have an empty house, the young people meet in Paul's bedroom to live out their clandestine love, knowing it will be their last day as lovers.
The story is based on the novel by Graham Swift, author of works such as 'Wish you were here', 'Last Orders', 'The light of day' and 'The Land of Water'. Its film adaptation was directed by Eva Husson ('Les falles du soleil'). The cast includes stars such as Colin Firth, Olivia Colman, Josh O'Connor, Caroline Harker, Odessa Young, Emma D'Arcy, Glenda Jackson, Patsy Ferran, Simon Shepherd, Craig Crosbie, Emily Woof, Forrest Bothwell and Sope Dirisu, among others. The film was scripted by Alice Birch and produced by Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Wooley.
