Plot
Beginning in Ireland, 1845, at the start of the period of mass starvation known as the Great Famine. Fisherman, father and husband Coleman Sharkey (Dónall Ó Héalai, 'Red Dead Redemption II', 'Impossible Monsters', 'Loud Places') worries as taxes rise and crops rot. When he approaches his landlord hoping for aid and understanding, the situation erupts into violence that forces Coleman to go on the run as he is pursued and charged with crimes that he did not commit. Coleman is distraught that he cannot save and provide for his wife and daughter, though he does take a young orphaned girl, Kitty (Saise Ní Chuinn), with him to protect as the famine worsens. As people grow more desperate and, thus, more cruel and the famine seems never ending, Coleman begins to fear that he and Kitty will not survive the winter.
Spoken almost entirely in the Gaelic language, 'Monster' brings one of the most tragic moments in Irish history to life. Tom Sullivan ('Mechanic', 'Fir Bolg', 'Personal Development') writes and directs. Joining the cast are Dara Devaney ('Grace Hart', 'Dominion Creek'), Seán T. Ó Meallaigh ('Vikings', 'Love Is a Sting'), Michael McElhatton ('Game of Thrones', 'Genius', 'The Fall') and Eoin O'Dubhghaill ('Out of Innocence', 'Aifric').
