Plot
Twenty years ago, in 1999, the world-famous heavy metal band, Metallica, collaborated with the San Francisco Symphony in a groundbreaking concert at the Berkeley Community Theatre that blended metal and classical music together as Metallica played their hits to the sounds of of a multi-piece orchestra, a feat later memorialised by the incredibly well-received 'S&M' album.
For their anniversary this year, Metallica has once again worked with the San Francisco Symphony, now led by Michael Tilson Thomas, to bring fans the second instalment in the concert films series, 'S&M2'. In addition to live footage from the concert itself, the film documents the history of the collaboration and honours the late composer Michael Kamen, who was heavily involved in the first iteration of 'S&M'. Through sharing footage of the band and orchestra's nerves and dedication in the weeks leading up to the performance, 'S&M' provides an insight into the immense offstage work that goes into an onstage show.
Amongst the hits performed in 'Metallica & San Francisco Symphony - S&M2' are: 'The Ecstasy of Gold', 'The Call of Ktulu', 'For Whom the Bell Tolls', 'The Day That Never Comes', 'Halo on Fire', 'Scythian Suite, Op.20, Second Movement', 'The Unforgiven III', 'Nothing Else Matters' and 'Enter Sandman'.
