After selling her home, and the life of her life bored with her aunt, Maud Dowley (Sally Hawkins) decides to become independent and seek a new adventure, such as finding work.

A sullen local fisherman named Everett Lewis (Ethan Hawke) is looking for a housekeeper to help with his home. After the announcement in the grocery store, Maud does not think about it and accepts the job. Shortly thereafter, she moves to her boss's house to take care of household chores.

At the beginning of the coexistence between them two differ, since Everett is tough and regal, but as it seems that the poles are attracted, in the end emerge a beautiful love story. The rheumatoid arthritis that he suffered from a young person reduces his activities to the painting.
