Plot
'Maria Montessori', also known as 'La Nouvelle Femme', is a cinematographic work directed by Léa Todorov. This social drama immerses us in the life of a middle-aged woman in Paris who seeks the help of Maria Montessori to care for her disabled daughter. The film debuted in the Official Section of the Barcelona Film Festival and is scheduled for release in theaters on May 1, 2024.
Lili d'Alengy (Leila Bekhti), a prominent figure in 20th century Parisian high society, is forced to face a new reality after the death of her mother. Now, she must take on the task of raising her disabled daughter, Tina, in a world that is not ready to accept differences. To keep her reputation intact and protect Tina from society's critical gaze, Lili decides to flee to Rome. It is in this city where she meets Maria Montessori (Jazmín Trinca), a prominent doctor whose innovative approach to the education of children with disabilities provides a new light of hope to Lili and Tina.
The development of the plot not only focuses on the relationship between Lili and Maria, but also on the challenges that both characters face in their respective personal lives. Maria, despite her brilliance and dedication, faces resistance from a conservative society that doubts her revolutionary methods. Social pressure and traditional expectations also affect Lili, especially when she faces the possibility of losing her daughter due to unfavorable circumstances.
Todorov spent a full year researching, making sure to capture the essence of the era and the historical figures the story is based on. The cast, led by Leïla Bekhti and Jasmine Trinca, delivers captivating performances that bring their characters to life in moving and compelling ways. The inclusion of neuroatypical actors and actors with motor disorders in supporting roles adds an additional layer of authenticity and respect for diversity.
