Plot
Directed and written by Xavier Villaverde, the documentary brings us closer to the figure of María Casares, a woman whose life and art was marked by the civil war, her subsequent exile to France and also her experience of World War II and the occupation. 'María Casares' narrates the most relevant historical events of the 20th century in Europe as we get to know the hard-working and resilient actress who, in her constant search for daring and risky scenic proposals, would consolidate her as one of the most acclaimed stars of the French film and theatre industry. Also known for being the muse and friend of Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre, as well as Albert Camús's lover.
Galician actress María Rivera, known for her roles in 'The Sea Inside', 'The Orphanage', 'Goya's Ghosts' and more recently, the TV series 'Rapa', lends her voice to imitate the voice of María Casares in the documentary.
'María Casares' features archival footage of María Casares and the participation of María Lopo, a doctor in French literature who specializes in María Casares. The feature film is a co-production between Spain and Portugal and is produced by Agallas FIlms and Take 2000, with the participation of TVG, with the support of AGADIC (the Galician Agency of Cultural Industries), the Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts, the Deputation of A Coruña, the City Council of A Coruña.
