The first is set in the Kent of 1944, in which gay writer Eric Faber (Matthew Tennyson, 'Pride') and religious conscience objetor Oliver Bell (Luke Thomas, 'Kiss Me First') have an honest conversation that ignites a tiny spark between them. The second races forward to 1982 in the middle of the Falklands War when a naval officer (Geoffrey Streatfield, 'Match Point') must visit deliver the news of a young man's death to his mother, May (Barbara Marten, 'A Passionate Woman'). The final moves further forward still to the Black Forest in 1996, where a Welsh soldier, Alan (Trystan Gravelle, 'Mr. Selfridge'), is struggling to take care for a troubled son who has taken to stealing. The pair discover a middle-aged woman, Helene (Deborah Findlay, 'Vanity Fair'), painting in the centre of the Black Forest, who shares with them the wisdom she has learned as a survivor of the Holocaust.
Based on the West End play by Robert Holman, and directed by Shakespearean theatre director Dominic Dromgoole, 'Making Noise Quietly' explores how the effects of various modern wars reverberate through the lives of individuals in the aftermath.
