Plot
First feature by Maltese editor Alex Camilleri, who makes his directorial debut with 'Luzzu', a feature film that had its premiere in the World Cinema Dramatic section of the 2021 Sundance Festival and also participated at the 55th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Film that seeks to show the social side of Malta, a country whose main image is oriented towards tourism. A production with which Camilleri decided not to work with professional actors, to give it a greater sense of realism.
Jesmark (Jesmark Scicluna) is a Maltese fisherman who owns Luzzu, a wooden boat with which he fishes. Jesmark is facing a new leak, which will challenge his fragile economic stability. His livelihood, which comes from a long family tradition marked by ancestral generations, is in danger of extinction due to the decrease in work, in addition to facing a ruthless fishing industry and a stagnant ecosystem.
Desperate to provide for his wife and his newborn son, who needs special medical treatment, Jesmark makes a decision that will mark his life forever: by gradually becoming involved in an illegal fishing network in the black market.
Produced by the Malta Film Commission, with the support of private production, 'Luzzu' is directed and written by Alex Camilleri. Starring Jesmark Scicluna, Michela Farrugia, David Scicluna Giusti, Frida Cauchi, Uday McLean and Stephen Buhagiar. 'Luzzu' was selected as the Maltese entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards.

Trivia
Non-professional Actors
From the start, Camilleri wanted to entrust the main roles to amateurs in order to make his story more authentic. With casting director Edward Said, he surveyed various fishing communities for months, to no avail. Eventually, as Alex Camilleri was about to return to New York, he met in Ghar Lapsi, a small fishing hamlet in the south of the island, Jesmark and David Scicluna - cousins and fishing partners in the real life.
Improvisations
After casting Jesmark and David, Camilleri had them rehearse for months, describing a scene to them and then asking them to improvise. He recorded them and later rewrote the scenes according to these improvisations.
Discovering an unfamiliar environment
Alex Camilleri is a filmmaker originally from Malta and based in the United States. He knew little about the field of fishing in Malta before shooting Luzzu, which is his first feature film.
