Plot
Film adaptation of the famous classic homonym of French literature, written by the acclaimed author Honoré de Balzac.
Lucien de Rubempré, a young lower-class poet, moves to Paris to maintain a relationship with Baroness Louise de Bargeton, with whom he is madly in love. But soon Lucien is rejected by his beloved. Alone, penniless, hungry and humiliated, he seeks revenge by writing controversial but banal articles. Within the coveted French capital, he stumbles upon a cynical world where everything, and everyone, can be bought and sold.
Filmmaker Xavier Giannoli directs and co-writes 'Lost Illusions'. Alongside him is screenplay by Jacques Fieschi. The cast includes actors Benjamin Voisin, Cécile De France, Vincent Lacoste, Xavier Dolan, Salomé Dewaels, Jeanne Balibar, Gérard Depardieu, André Marcon, Louis-Do de Lencquesaing, Jean-François Stévenin, Alexis Barbosa, Arnaud de Montlivaut, Marie Cornillon, Saïd Amadis, Raphaël Magnabosco, Mathieu Cayrou, Morgane de Vargas, Michèle Clément and, finally, Aurélia Frachon.
Variety praised the film: "This sweeping period drama may be up to its eyeballs in costumes and carriages, but it plays with all the brio and jeopardy of a modern-day gangster movie, featuring hack journalists as its antiheroes".
