Plot
'Living' is an English adaptation of the 1952 screenplay of the Japanese film 'Ikiru', written and directed by Akira Kurosawa. It is set in 1950s London, where Williams, a bored bureaucrat, has a revelation that leads him to search for the meaning of life after discovering he has a terminal illness. 'Ikiru' was in turn inspired by the novel 'The Death of Ivan Ilyich' by Leo Tolstoy.
It is directed by Oliver Hermanus, director behind films such as 'Shirley Adams' and 'Moffie', with Kazuo Ishiguro, a writer who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2017, in charge of writing Kurosawa's screenplay adaptation.
Bill Night ('Love Actually', 'The Boat That Rocked (Pirate Radio)') plays Williams, who in his original version was played by Takashi Shimura as Kanji Watanabe. He is joined by Aimee Lou Wood ('Sex Education') as Margaret Harris, Alex Sharp ('The Trial of the Chicago 7', 'To the Bone') as Peter Wakeling and Adrian Rawlins ('Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2', Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire') as Middleton. The rest of the cast includes Hubert Burton, Oliver Chris, Michael Cochrane, Anant Varman, Zoe Boyle, Lia Williams, Jessica Flood, Jamie Wilkes, Richard Cunningham, John MacKay, Ffion Jolly, Celeste Dodwell, Patsy Ferran, and Jonathan Keeble.
