Last Breath

At 91 years old, the Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film for 'Z' (1969) presented a new perspective on a complex topic: death, in the Official Section of the San Sebastián Festival.

Through the conversation between Augustin Masset, a doctor at a palliative care hospital, and writer Fabrice Toussaint, who is very concerned about his health, a constant dialogue filled with thoughts and reflections unfolds. Both protagonists face the challenges of existence, where health, death, and the purpose of life intertwine in every conversation. They find themselves immersed in a whirlwind of visits, encounters, and unexpected situations that lead them on a deep and introspective journey.

In this journey, amidst moments of joy and sadness, the two discover the complexity of the human condition, confronting the certainty of the end while also appreciating the experiences they have lived. Through a sensitive and reflective lens, the film invites us to contemplate life, death, and the bonds we build along the way. It is a moving human journey that reminds us that every life, no matter how small it may seem, has immense value and that, in the end, we all share a journey marked by uncertainty, love, and pain.

This adaptation of the book co-written by philosopher Régis Debray and doctor Claude Grange immerses us in a state of calm where listening and mutual support prevail.

With a cast that includes Kad Merad, known for 'The Chorus' and 'Welcome to the Sticks,' as well as the notable participation of Ángela Molina and Charlotte Rampling, the director offers a vitalistic view of the last moments of life, addressing the topic and its characters with a surprising naturalness.
