La Cocina

In a restaurant for tourists, where all kinds of people and cultures converge in Manhattan, New York, lunchtime fills The Grill's kitchen with orders. It's workers must work tirelessly to get all the orders out in order and on time. Pedro works there, a Mexican immigrant cook who falls in love with Julia, an American waitress who needs money for an abortion. She feels the same way about Pedro, but the fact that he is an undocumented immigrant makes Julia doubt her possible relationship with him. When a wad of bills disappears from the restaurant's cash register, Pedro is accused of being the author of the robbery. From then on, full of frustration and helplessness, Pedro sets out to destroy the restaurant from the inside, while continuing to try to have something with Julia.

The film is directed by Alonso Ruizpalacios ('Güeros'), who also wrote the script for this film adaptation of Arnold Wesker's play 'The Kitchen'. The film stars Rooney Mara (nominated for an Oscar for 'Carol') as Julia; and Raúl Briones ('A Cop Movie') as Pedro. The cast is completed by Oded Fehr ('The Mummy' saga).

This film had its premiere at the Berlinale, where it was competing for the Golden Bear.
