Plot
During the last days of World War I, in October 1918, the soldier Charles Plumpick (played by Alan Bates) is sent by his bosses to deactivate some supposed bombs left by the Germans as they pass through a small French town called Marville during his withdrawal from the battlefield. When Plumpick arrives at the place, he only finds that the inmates of an abandoned asylum have managed to get hold of the town.
Upon arrival, the unstable patients believe that he is the "king of hearts" and the soldier, feeling obliged to help them, tries to get them out of there although everyone is afraid to leave the place. The young man will have to be able to defuse the bomb and get them out of there before it's too late.
