Justin Kemp, a family man who decides to go out to a bar one night, witnesses a heated argument between a couple that ends in violence. When Justin is driving home at night in the rain, he gets distracted for a moment by his phone and his car crashes into something. Upon getting out of the vehicle, the protagonist sees nothing under the car, assuming he hit an animal that may have run away.

Almost a year later, Justin is called to serve on the jury for a trial against the boyfriend of the girl he saw arguing, who was found dead near the road Justin drove that same night. As the trial progresses, the protagonist learns of evidence that could suggest he was the one who accidentally killed the girl with his car that night, leading him into a moral debate about whether to admit his involvement in her death or to distance himself from guilt, with both options being crucial for the outcome of the trial.

This drama is the fortieth film directed by Clint Eastwood, featuring Nicholas Hoult ('Mad Max') as the lead in the role of Justin Kemp. The cast also includes Toni Collette ('Hereditary'), J. K. Simmons ('Whiplash'), and Gabriel Basso ('Super 8') as the accused in the trial.
