Plot
David Bickerstaff, Phil Grabsky, Amanda Wilkie, and Asa Bennett direct and bring to screen 'John Singer Sargent: Fashion and Swagger', a documentary created by the producers of 'Vermeer: The Greatest Exhibition in History.' This documentary presents the life and work of the painter John Singer Sargent through archival footage, expert interviews, and various statements to understand his art.
Born in 1856, the artist began painting at a young age. However, he received formal training in Florence with the French portraitist Carolus-Duran, who was at the peak of his career at that time thanks to his energetic technique and innovative teaching methods. When he was twenty-three years old he painted the first official portrait of his master, a work that convinced the public.
Another great influence was Velázquez, as he studied his paintings to learn his technique. He even went trace 'Las Meninas' down to the millimeter to capture its essence. Over time, and with his return to his homeland, he began to receive numerous commissions that would catapult his work to stardom, increasingly defining his remarkable nature with each of them. 'John Singer Sargent: Fashion and Swagger' showcases his works in Spain thanks to A Contracorriente Films, which distributes the documentary in national theaters.
