Plot
'Inna de Yard' is an ode-like documentary to the reggae, specifically the sub-genre of roots reggae that exploded in the 1960s and 1970s as a means of using music to convey cultural and political messages to its listeners.
The documentary begins in rural Jamaica as it struggles to cope with the poverty and aggression stemming from a violent colonial past as part of the British empire through music infused with the spirit of activism. It follows several notable reggae musicians such as Ken Boothe, Cedric Myton, Kiddus I and Winston McAnuff and Judy Mowatt as they attempt to relaunch some of their classic hits in time for a concert in Paris. Through a series of personal interviews, the musicians share all about their life and work, from Boothe's history with drug abuse to Cedric Myton's love for his home country and his family abroad.
'Inna de Yard' tracks the history of reggae in the Caribbean and abroad whilst also delving into how the older generation amongst which the seeds of reggae bloomed are attempting to collaborate with younger generations to pass their love of this style of music on.
'Inna de Yard' is directed and written by Peter Webber ('Girl with a Pearl Earring', 'Tutankhamun', 'Pickpockets', 'Ten Billion', 'Emperor').
