In Her Place

It is the year 1955 when, in Chile, María Carolina Geel, the popular writer, murders her lover. The case captivates a shy Mercedes, who is the clerk of the judge in charge of the case. After visiting the writer's apartment, where she finds a space of freedom, Mercedes begins to question different aspects of her life, identity, and the role that women play in society. This is a story based on real events.

It is a reinterpretation of the story told in the book 'Las homicidas,' authored by Alía Trabucco Zerán, which in turn was based on the true story of María Carolina Geel, who murdered her boyfriend, Roberto Pumarino Valenzuela, in April 1955.

This drama has been directed by Maite Alberdi, the Oscar-nominated director for her film 'El agente Topo.' She also has other great feature films in her notable filmography, such as 'La once,' 'Los niños,' and 'La memoria infinita.'

'El lugar de la otra' was part of the official competition at the San Sebastián International Film Festival and will premiere directly on Netflix.

The Academy of Cinema of Chile has chosen this feature film to represent the country at both the Oscars and the Goya Awards in 2025.
