Plot
CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) are families of DNA sequences in bacteria, and control over this form of bacteria marks an extraordinary breakthrough. The manipulation of CRISPR is the path to curing diseases and even learning to determine the attributes of our offspring. 'Human Nature' explores this discovery through interviews with the scientists that uncovered it and those who used bioengineering to modify it. Families whose lives were altered by CRISPR also offer testimonies. This documentary explores the questions around this new field in the genetic enhancement and opens the door to trying to understand the ethical implications of this new evolutionary discovery.
Adam Bolt, the filmmaker behind the Oscar winning documentary, 'Inside Job', directs his first long feature film with 'Human Nature'. With him, Regina Sobel ('Fail State') co-writes the script with the help of a investigation work with scientists and specialists. 'Human Nature' delves into the discovery of CRISPR, its impact on the world, and the future of bioengineering.
The importance of 'Human Nature' was acknowledged when it was awarded with the Audience Award from the Academia Film Olomouc, in the Czech Republic. The documentary was also nominated for the Creative Recognition Award from the International Documentary Association for Keegan DeWitt´s music.
