Hour of the Star

This 1985 film tells the story of Macabéa, a young orphan who, at just 19 years old, ventures into the world. She is an illiterate, naive, and virgin girl who leaves the northeast of Brazil to go to São Paulo to try her luck. Once there, she works as a typist and lives in a miserable boarding house. One day, by pure chance, she meets Olímpico, a metallurgy worker who is also from the north, with whom she begins a romance. In her new phase in the big city, she faces her first professional experiences, first love, and what the predictions of the fortune teller say, a collision of worlds that seals her fate.

Directed by Suzana Amaral, this film is an adaptation of the homonymous novel published by Clarice Lispector in 1977, shortly before the writer's death. It was awarded at both the Brasília Film Festival and the Berlin International Film Festival.

During 2024, several months were dedicated to digitally restoring the work. For this, both the original 35mm film negative for the master scan and another physical copy used as a reference for color correction were utilized. The audio had already been digitized in a previous restoration, so that same audio was used again.
