Plot
Set in 2001, 'Holy Spider' tells the story of Rahimi, a journalist who decides to infiltrate Mashad, the second most populous city in Ira with more than 3.5 million people. Once Rahimi manages to enter the dangerous city, she discovers that somthing is happening and no one is taking notice of it. In Mashhad there is a murderer (Saeed Hanaei) who is dedicated to killing the city's prostitutes as a sign of purification of the sins that, from his point of view, these ladies pour on Mashad, a city that is considered 'the spiritual capital of Iran'.
This Danish film will be released on January 13, however, it already has a long journey at festivals. At the Cannes Film Festival it was a resounding success, it was here that the main actress who plays the journalist, Zar Amir Ebrahimi, managed to win the Palme d'Or for best leading actress. Another four nominations for the European Film Awards, or his candidacy representing Denmark for the Oscars 2023 endorse the work of Ali Abassi, its director.
Ali Abassi, of Iranian origin, pretends with this film to make visible the femicides that are covered up or even supported in the countries of the East, specifically in Iran. This film was born from the need to show the world a real problem which most people turn their backs to. Abassi presents 'Holy Spider' after receiving international prestige with his film 'Border'. In addition, it is curious to see the contrast of the genres that the director is capable of handling, since 'Holy Spider' arrives almost at the same time as another of Abassi's works, this time for HBO Max, the series adaptation of the video game 'The Last of US'.
