Plot
The brilliant director of documentaries, Thomas Heise, is the responsible of this new documentary in which he dives into four different generations of his own family through the archives that this has. These four generations include from 19th century to the very present. Through the intime stories of his family, Heise wants to show the big cultural and political events that have turned Germany in what it is for the last one hundred years.
Heise creates a collage with different documents that he has found, with letters and diaries that he reads in a voiceover, combined with black and white pictures of different landscapes and spaces in Germany. In this new work, the deepest of all he has done, the silence becomes a fundamental factor. The silence reveals as much as what is said and it is done with fragments that throw attention to what is missing.
'Heimat Is A Space In Time' spans the two world wars, the collapse of the economy, the horrible genocide, the rise and fall of the different political ideologies, at the same time that Thomas Heise focus on small details from his own personal experience through the subtle shifts in the light of the ladscapes that he shows.
'Heimat Is A Space In Time' is one of the most visceral documentaries that ever exist.
