Info

Plot

The movie is focused and represents the responsibilities, highly dramatic and high risk decisions which a woman named Golda Meir (also known as the Lady of Iron in Israel during the Yom Kippur war) had to face. The life of The Lady of Iron of Israel, Golda Meir, played by Helen Mirren, wasn't normal or easy at all.

Golda Meir was the first female minister of Israel. She took the name of the Lady of Iron because of her work, where she had to make very important decisions which could change the world from one day to the next, with long lasting consequences.

Israel was just attacked from Egypt, Siria and Jordania in the sacred day of Israel in 1973. This action will be known in the future as the Yom Kippur war and will provoke only complications to a lot of people.

This is the reason why minister Golda Meir will feel like she has the responsibility for what's happening in her country. Gold will want to put an end to this situation and fin a solution to help the people who are in a bad position and her country. The decisions she'll have to make won't be easy but as her nickname says, she is not easy to scare and she's definitely not afraid of taking the leadership in complicated moments as the one they are living.

This movie is a look to Golda Meir and her work as the first female minister of Israel. With Guy Nattiv as the director and Nicholas Martin as writer.

Trivia

Characterization

Helena Mirren had to spend three and a half hours in make-up in order to turn into Golda.

"Who by Fire"

The song at the end of the movie is titled "Who by Fire" by Leonard Cohen. The song is based in prayer the Jewish said during de High Holidays, mostly in Yom Kippur, called "Unetanneh Tokef" ("Let us speak the awesomeness"). The song is relevant to the movie theme because Cohen visited Israel in October, 1973 to play in a series of concerts, which inspired him to write this piece. The song is also part of his album from 1974 titled 'New Skin for the Old Ceremony". This period of Cohen's career is discussed in a Matti Friedman's book titled "Who by Fire".

The cabinet room

The cabinet room is an exact replica from the meeting room which resides in the Kirya base in Tel-Aviv currently. The house was built in 1930 by a couple who run away from the country after de second world war, when the british military ceased. In 1948, David Ben-Gurion decided that it will turn into the official residence of the government. Onward, in 2006, after the last term of Arielle Sharon as prime minister, the official residence of the government moved from the house and after being preserved and renovated is currently being used as a visitor centre for the IDF staff.
