Plot
Frida Kahlo is an omnipresent feminist icon. This documentary shows us a privileged access to her work, her creativity, her resilience and her unmatched sensuality. What do we know about her as an artist? Frida Kahlo was a self-portrait painter who portrayed in the canvas every stage of her turbulent life. Her passion for politics, her mexican-indigenous heritage, her love for men and women and her legendary style shape this exploration of her thrilling and sometimes tragic life. Voiced by the artist herself, the film accesses her deepest emotions through her handwritten letters, discovering the secrets and symbolism her art hides. We'll see interviews with renowed academics and we'll explore a new perspective of Frida Kahlo's paintings: her maternal yearning, her great love for Diego Rivera and her eternal and unmistakeable self-portraits.
'Frida Kahlo' is directed by British Ali Ray inside the series 'Exhibition on Screen', that has the goal of showing art exhibitions around the world and has already exhibited the work of Renoir, Monet and Rembrandt, being this the first woman that is chosen. The director considers that Frida Kahlo "knew how to do the hard thing, to paint pain", and intends to show "an artist Frida, far from the more known figure, but because of other matters different from her art".
